An editorial direction for FishInsight that puts the answer first.
Three surfaces, targeted friction fixes, honoring the existing Tackle Box palette.

What changed and why
The Verdict. A single declarative answer in big serif at the top — "Today: Area 9 is the call." No other fishing app does this. Anglers want an answer, not a chart.
Conditions promoted to a live strip. Tide, water temp, wind, pressure, and the swell window — visible above the fold with trend arrows. Tide is the decisive factor; it was buried in a card footer before.
Area board replaces area chips. Tabular, sortable, scannable — like a financial table. Each area is one row with rating, score, open status, and a one-line detail. The "Best" pick is marked with copper.
"Scan a fish" CTA promoted and unauth-friendly. Was hidden behind auth; now it's a permanent fixture in the right rail with a "try it" path for anonymous visitors.
Alternate picks (Rivers / Lakes). Compressed from full cards to two "best of" picks — preserves the multi-surface promise without three competing cards.
Honest live indicator. Pulsing dot + "Live · refreshed 4 min ago" matches the zero-hallucination posture. No mystery data.

Today's Marine Picture
Seven Puget Sound areas, sorted by today's outlook
Reordered above the fold. Was: Crumb → Hero → Alert → About paragraphs → Conditions → Species. Now: Crumb → Title → Verdict → Conditions → Species table. The "should I go and what for" answer comes first; the SEO/About content moves to the aside.
Species outlook becomes a table, not card grid. 5 species are easier to compare in rows. Adds a one-line "why" per species (e.g., "Tide window aligns with feed time") that's missing today.
"Week Ahead" strip is new. 7-day mini-forecast for this species at this area — answers "what about Saturday?" without leaving the page.
Hotspots get a map+list pairing. Today they're a text list below the fold. The illustrated chart-style map is FishInsight-authentic — and tells you where not just what.
About paragraphs collapse to a single italic lede with "Read full guide →" — keeps SEO copy alive without burying the action.
Open and excellent for salmon today. Best window: late morning slack at Point No Point.
Outgoing tide pushes bait through the rip — fish stack on the south side of Pt. No Point an hour either side of low (11:42a). Hatchery chinook + early coho both showing.

What's open, what's biting, what's worth your time
Binary open/closed becomes a 4-step rating heatmap. The dashboard has rating nuance (excellent → poor) but the weekly view threw it away. Now: cells are color-shaded by predicted rating and overlay the score number — open and good is visibly different from open and mediocre. Closed cells use diagonal hatching so they're unmistakable.
The Verdict pattern repeats. "This week: Saturday is the call" — same single-answer move as the dashboard, scaled to a week. Anglers planning a trip get the answer instantly.
"Best day per area" footer. If you're committed to a specific area (favorite spot, boat ramp), this answers which day. Complement to the heatmap, not a replacement.
Honest source line. Kept the explicit "we never show data we can't verify" stance — relocated to a quiet footer with the data sources and last-refreshed time. Trust, made legible.
